Emil and all the children who helped him were afraid at different points during their adventure. Some were afraid of the thief and some were afraid of getting into trouble with their parents. Some were afraid of being out so late and some were afraid that the plan would fail completely. But none of them let their fear stop them from doing what they had decided they needed to do. They kept their posts and ran their messages and held their positions as the hours went by slowly. Emil stood at the front and kept his nerve when it was the hardest and most frightening time of all. The operation was risky and involved real stakes and there was no adult oversight to catch them if things went wrong. Gustav admitted later that he had been genuinely frightened that the thief would notice the surveillance and react with violence. Emil had been frightened that the policeman would dismiss his account as the story of a confused country boy from out of town. Pony Hütchen had been frightened that her bicycle would break down at the worst possible moment during the operation. But each of them had decided that the fear was beside the point — the right thing still needed to be done regardless of how they felt. Kästner's admiration for this quality in his young characters is evident on every page of the novel and in every scene they inhabit.
