Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Stevenson presents Jekyll’s first transformation not merely as a physical event, but as a profound metaphysical rupture. The potion acted as a key, but the lock was on Jekyll’s soul. For decades, he had meticulously constructed a persona: Dr. Jekyll, the epitome of Victorian civility. This required a constant, exhausting act of suppression—burying impatience, lust, and a latent cruelty beneath layers of charitable work and polite conversation. The laboratory scene is one of terrifying alchemy. As his body contorts, so does his very essence. What emerges is not a ‘new’ man, but the raw, undistilled sediment of the old one. Hyde is Jekyll minus the conscience, the social contract, the fear of God. This is why Jekyll’s own account is so powerfully conflicted. He wrote that the first transformation was the most terrifying and the most exhilarating experience of his life: the terror of becoming something genuinely other, and the exhilaration of being finally free from the civil obligations of being Dr. Jekyll. The true horror dawns not in the moment of change, but in its aftermath. Staring into a mirror, Jekyll doesn’t see a monster; he sees a truth. The part of himself he had denied was not only real but stronger, more vital, and utterly amoral. The exhilaration curdles into dread because he realizes this ‘freedom’ is a one-way street into darkness, and the civilized self he longed to escape is the only thing that ever made him human.
