KOREAN STORY ·

'I'd like to deposit this check' "

"Hi! How can I help you today?"

"I'd like to deposit this check, please."

"Of course! May I have your account number or debit card?"

"Have you endorsed the check on the back?"

Endorsed? "

"Signed the back. Did you sign your name on the back of the check?"
"Oh! Yes. I sign already."

"Perfect! The amount is $247.50. It will be available in your account by tomorrow morning."

"Tomorrow morning? Not today?"

"Checks usually take one business day to clear. But sometimes it's faster."

"Okay. I understand. Thank you."

"Here's your receipt. Have a great day!"

Deposit. Endorse.

Young-ja's daughter asks her to deposit a check at the bank.

Young-ja has never seen a check before.

Her daughter explains: sign the back, then say "I'd like to deposit this check."

Young-ja signs the back and goes to the bank.

At the counter she says, "I'd like to deposit this check, please."

The teller asks for the account card and checks if the back is signed.

Young-ja answers everything correctly.

The teller says, "The amount is $247.50. Available tomorrow morning."

Young-ja asks, "Not today?"

"Checks take one business day to clear," the teller explains.

Young-ja nods, takes her receipt, and walks out.

She texts her daughter: "Done! Coming tomorrow morning!"

She smiles to herself. "Deposit. Endorse. Check. Three new words today."

✅ B1 Level —

The envelope arrived in the morning mail.

Young-ja's daughter opened it, glanced at the check inside, and sighed.

"Insurance refund. I've been waiting for this. Mom — any chance you could take this to the bank today?

I have back-to-back meetings. "

Young-ja took the check and looked at it carefully.

She had seen checks in movies. Never held one.

A small rectangle of paper that represented real money.

Remarkable, she thought. Korea had moved past these years ago.

"Sign the back with my signature," her daughter said, pulling on her jacket.

"Then go to any teller and say: 'I'd like to deposit this check.'

Give them my debit card if they ask for account info. That's it. "

Young-ja practiced the sentence twice on the bus.

"I'd like to deposit this check, please."

"I'd like to deposit this check, please."

The bank was quiet at 10 a.m.

She waited five minutes, then approached the window.

"Hi! What can I do for you today?"

Young-ja placed the check carefully on the counter.

"I'd like to deposit this check, please."

The teller picked it up. "Of course! Account number or debit card?"

Young-ja slid the card across.

"Thank you. And have you endorsed the check?"

Young-ja blinked. "Endorsed?"

"Signed the back — your signature on the reverse side."

"Oh! Yes. I signed the back. Already."

The teller flipped it over, nodded, and tapped at her keyboard.

"Perfect. The check is for two hundred forty-seven dollars and fifty cents.

It will be available in the account by tomorrow morning — checks usually take one business day to process. "

"Not today?"

"Sometimes it clears faster, but we say tomorrow to be safe."

Young-ja nodded slowly, absorbing the information.

"I understand. That is fine. Thank you."

She tucked the receipt into her purse and walked back out into the sunshine.

On the bus home, she took out a small notebook and wrote:

deposit = 입금 / endorse = 뒷면 서명 / clear = 처리되다

She texted her daughter: "수표 입금 완료.

Three dots. Then: "엄마 최고야 ❤️"
