We · Yevgeny Zamyatin · 1924
On the island of Utopia, the air felt different. There were no fences, no grand houses looming over smaller ones. Work was a shared rhythm, not a desperate scramble. Each morning, Raphael saw citizens heading to their farms or workshops, knowing their six hours of labour contributed to the whole community's storehouse. At day's end, they took what they needed from the public halls—clothes, food, tools. No one hoarded, for there was nothing to buy and no wealth to flaunt. The frantic anxiety of competition was gone, replaced by a quiet, collective purpose. People had time—for gardens, for study, for conversation under the evening sky. It was a society built not on having, but on being.
