We · Yevgeny Zamyatin · 1924
In More's Utopia, the island's harmony was not just economic. Its people held diverse religious beliefs, yet lived in profound peace. This was the most striking feature for the European visitor, Raphael Hythloday. He witnessed citizens who worshipped the sun, the stars, or ancient heroes, all sharing the same public spaces for prayer without conflict. The law, based on a shared belief in a supreme power and an afterlife, protected this tolerance. It forbade forcing belief on others, understanding that compulsion breeds only resentment, not true faith. This design acknowledged a core of human nature: the deep need for spiritual meaning, while wisely preventing that need from becoming a source of division and violence among people.
