We · Yevgeny Zamyatin · 1924
In the island of Utopia, there was no such thing as 'mine' or 'yours.' The people worked the land together, and the fruits of their labor were shared equally by all. No one hoarded food while another went hungry, and no grand house stood next to a hovel. Work was a common duty, rotated so that all contributed and all had ample time for learning and leisure. This system, Hythloday explained, removed the greed and envy that plagued other nations. Because property was held in common, the desperate competition to own more than one's neighbor simply vanished. People lived not for wealth, but for the community's well-being.
