오늘의 이야기 — 한글 스토리
KOREAN STORY · 미국 패밀리 레스토랑에서 키즈 메뉴

영자가 소연이와 함께 미국 패밀리 레스토랑에 갔습니다.

딸이 늦게까지 회의가 있어서 두 사람이 먼저 저녁을 먹기로 했습니다.

웨이터가 다가왔습니다.

"Hi there! Table for two?"

영자가 말했습니다.

"Yes please. And — do you have a kids menu?"

웨이터가 웃으며 말했습니다.

"Of course! Right here."

소연이가 메뉴를 펼쳤습니다.

치킨 너겟, 미니 버거, 맥앤치즈, 미니 피자...

소연이가 말했습니다.

"Grandma, I want chicken nuggets!"

영자가 웨이터에게 말했습니다.

"She wants chicken nuggets, please."

소연이가 속삭였습니다.

"Grandma, 'chicken nugget' is the same in Korean too!"

영자가 웃으며 말했습니다.

"Yes! Chicken nugget is universal language!"

웨이터가 웃었습니다.

"That's very true! Some words are the same everywhere."

영자도 메뉴를 봤습니다.

그릴드 새먼을 시켰습니다.

음식이 나왔습니다.

소연이가 치킨 너겟에 케첩을 잔뜩 찍어 먹었습니다.

영자가 말했습니다.

"Soyeon, you like ketchup?"

소연이가 말했습니다.

"Grandma, in English we say 'ketchup.' In Korean we say '케첩.' Same!"

영자가 웃으며 말했습니다.

"And in Korean, French fries is 감자튀김. But 'fries' everyone understands!"

소연이가 생각하더니 말했습니다.

"Grandma, we should make a list — words that are the same in English and Korean!"

영자가 고개를 끄덕였습니다.

"Good idea. Tonight, we make the list."

집에 오면서 두 사람은 같은 단어를 찾아봤습니다.

chicken nugget, pizza, hamburger, ketchup, ice cream, taxi, bus...

소연이가 말했습니다.

"Grandma! There are so many!"

영자가 웃으며 말했습니다.

"English and Korean — not so different after all."

Soyeon says, "Grandma! 'Chicken nugget' is the same in Korean!"

Young-ja laughs. "Chicken nugget — universal language!"

The waiter smiles. "Some words are the same everywhere!"

Young-ja says, "English and Korean — not so different!"

✅ A2 Level — 초급 · 기본 회화 수준

Young-ja takes Soyeon to a family restaurant for dinner.

As soon as they sit down, Young-ja asks the waiter,

"Do you have a kids menu?"

The waiter brings one right away.

Soyeon chooses chicken nuggets.

Young-ja orders for her, then notices something funny.

"Soyeon — 'chicken nugget' is the same word in Korean too!"

Soyeon giggles. "And 'pizza'! And 'hamburger'! And 'ketchup'!"

The waiter joins in. "Some words travel around the world."

Young-ja orders grilled salmon for herself.

After a happy dinner, they walk home making a list of words

that are the same in English and Korean.

Pizza, taxi, bus, ice cream, camera, chocolate...

"So many!" Soyeon says.

Young-ja smiles. "English and Korean — closer than I thought."

✅ B1 Level — 중급 · 자연스러운 영어

Young-ja's daughter had texted from the office: "Running late — meeting ran over.

Can you take Soyeon for dinner? There's a family restaurant two blocks down. "

Young-ja had looked at Soyeon.

Soyeon had looked at Young-ja.

"Just us?" Soyeon said.

"Just us," Young-ja said.

The restaurant was warm and cheerful, full of families.

A young waiter led them to a booth and handed them menus.

"Can I start you off with some drinks?"

Young-ja looked at the drinks menu, then back up.

"Water, please. And — do you have a kids menu?"

"Right here!" He produced a laminated single-page menu with a small box of crayons.

Soyeon's face lit up.

The kids menu featured the classics: chicken nuggets, mini burgers,

mac and cheese, mini pizza, corn dog.

Soyeon studied it with the gravity of someone making an important decision.

"Chicken nuggets," she announced.

Young-ja relayed the order.

Then Soyeon looked up with sudden delight.

"Grandma — 'chicken nugget' is the same in Korean! We say 치킨너겟!"

Young-ja thought about this. She was right.

"And pizza?"

"Same! 피자!"

"Hamburger?"

"Same! 햄버거!"

The waiter, who had come back with waters, caught the end of this exchange.

"Global foods," he said cheerfully. "The words travel with the food."

"It's true," Young-ja agreed. "Some things need no translation."

She ordered the grilled salmon and spent the rest of dinner

across from her granddaughter, both of them eating happily and trading words

like players in a very pleasant game.

Ketchup — 케첩. Taxi — 택시. Bus — 버스.

Chocolate — 초콜릿. Camera — 카메라. Ice cream — 아이스크림.

"Grandma," Soyeon said as they put on their coats to leave,

"English is actually not that hard."

Young-ja looked at her.

"No," she agreed. "Some of it we already knew.

We just didn't know we knew it. "
