Today is Step 4.

The trainees enter the spacesuit lab.
They see helmets, gloves, boots, and white spacesuits.

Robo says, "A spacesuit is not just clothing."

A spacesuit helps astronauts live in space.
It gives them oxygen. It protects their body.
It helps them talk to the crew.

The trainees check the helmet. They check the gloves. They check the boots.

The instructor says, "Check your suit before every mission."

Now the trainees understand. A spacesuit keeps astronauts safe.

A spacesuit is one of the most important pieces of astronaut equipment.
It may look like clothing, but it is actually a personal life-support system.

Outside a spacecraft, astronauts face a very dangerous environment.
There is no breathable air, almost no air pressure, and extreme temperature changes.

A spacesuit provides oxygen for breathing, removes carbon dioxide, controls temperature, and helps maintain pressure around the body.

The helmet protects the head and face and gives astronauts a clear view of the work area.
The gloves protect the hands but must still allow astronauts to use tools carefully.
The boots help protect the feet and support movement.

Modern spacesuits also include communication equipment.
Astronauts must be able to speak with their crew and Mission Control during every spacewalk.

The most important lesson: a spacesuit is not just something astronauts wear.
It is a small protective spacecraft that surrounds the human body.
